Never Do Things You Don’t Believe In!

This issue should be in need of no debate or a post trying to explain this self-evident truth.

But give me a second to explain!

Too many people are trapped in jobs and chores which they don’t believe in.  Sadly in many cases, too many have never paused for a second and asked themselves if they believe in what they do.

Many reasons exist for why people don’t believe in what they do. But a common thread is that many people treat what they do as an end in itself and not a means to an end. In essence, many people have never asked and answered their why of why they do what they do.

This shows in the level dedication and enthusiasm brought to task and chores in which they are involved. Sure many might give what is expected of the chores or jobs in which they are involved but rarely do they go above and beyond and give more than is required of them.

But its when people totally believe in what they do that they would go beyond and above what is required. Its in this territory that people begin realizing their potential. Furthermore, its when people believe in what they do with conviction that most other considerations become secondary and they develop a driver which can weather weather many challenges.

Believing in what you do with conviction can take on different forms. For example, someone in the medical field can believe in what they do because they see it as a means towards reliving people with the most chronic and debilitating ailments. Or people in the engineering field can believe that engineering innovations are key in making society better. In both cases, both professions were simply a means towards an end.

In recent years, one of my mantras has become to never do what I don’t believe in.  I guess this kind of goes with my nature of never showing too much enthusiasm for chores which are not really of my choosing. Thus, if you see me doing something and giving my time and effort its because I believe in it with all my heart.  If I don’t see something possibly good to come out from a task or can’t see a way in which it would aid some of my life goals and beliefs, I would never waste my time.

For those who have never really thought this issue through, a question which might be asked could be: how do I figure out if I believe in what I am doing?

Start by asking yourself what you want from life and what some of you goals are. Figure out what your core beliefs  and belief system is. List the core issues and causes you believe in. Think about what you would like to see different in your community or even the world. Then paint a picture – or rather articulate – of what you see as the end results and destination of your goals. Then ask yourself how you can being moving towards that destination considering the tools and resources you have and begin moving towards that destination.

Obviously reaching it would not happen right away and things will probably change along the way as you gain better understanding or some of your starting assumptions change. But along this journey, for ever chore you do, ask a simple question: is what I am doing a dead end or a means towards my goals and aspirations? If the answer is negative, develop a way of changing course or even totally abandon what you are doing.

Keep Moving

Even if you are on the right track you’ll get run over if you just sit there.

In different post I’ve talked about how a few things here ad there on the margins done consistently over time produce big changes and results.

Ill confess that on some days, I simply don’t really feel like doing anything or feel overwhelmed and don’t really know where to begin.  But the I’ve learnt to over come this by getting just one thing done for my startup which I know puts it in the right direction. It could be as simple as updating my business contact list or making a few changes of letters used in email campaigns.

I have no clue what you do or what you goals and aspirations are. Even if you know exactly what your calling is, never get complacent. At the least, do a thing here and there each day and very soon you will be talking about sizable results.

Never Giving In!

As we enter a new week, I have no clue what challenges you face. But something is for sure: we all face challenges of differing magnitudes. Remember something: if you are working towards anything, never give up and always remind yourself of the possible rewards and the cost of giving up. Determine in your heart, that never would it be said how close you came towards victory but gave up after coming very close.

Never Underestimating or Undervaluing Yourself

I came across a video clip on social media which tells the story of a man who for over 30 years,  planted a tree everyday in the same area which was once a thriving oasis of vegetation and wildlife but had been transformed into a desert through deforestation.

Each day for many decades, the man simply planted a tree. With time, the vegetation of the once lush area began making a comeback till it once again became a forest in which wildlife also returned.

A lot can be learnt from this story and can be applied to many areas of life.

One lesson to be learnt is consistency. The man made sure he did something everyday and had a pattern and did not expect results to come over night. If anything, the man probably did not have an end results in mind but took on the challenge with an attitude of being open to seeing how things turned out.

In trying to achieve anything, persistence is key. People must be ready for long and drawn out efforts. But in reality too many people lack patience to reach their goals and give up too easily when they encounter the first obstacle.

Many times when aiming for goals or things we want to achieve, we often fall into the trap of looking for the one size fits all solution which needs to be implemented once or just a few times and will give big results. But in reality, results take time and are a consequence of marginal efforts which accumulate over time.

Most importantly, biggest take away is what individuals are capable of achieving. Through social interactions, popular culture, and even the educational system, seeds are sown into people which make them believe they are incapable of transformative acts and they thus devalue themselves. In the process people shortchange themselves and easily dismiss ideas which they might have as careless or wishful thinking.

I don’t know what challenges you face or what goals and life aspirations you might have. But I want to tell you that you are more than capable of reaching it. It definitely will not be easy or will take place over night.  But through consistency, determination, and a unshakable faith in your value and what you are capable of, its within reach and achievable. All you need is some guts and courage!
